Does any one know a good way to totally clean a GI canteen including the cork? I have read of ways with sand and such but doesn't seem right. any hints?

Give the inside a swirling with some bleach and water. Rinse it out really well. Unless it's really grungy or rusty it won't kill anybody. Leave the cork alone, messing with it just seems to tear it up rather than clean it. If the outside is rusty steel wool and WD40 work pretty well.
