Our next event is first weekend of June, and its a WWII mixed reenactment/Airsoft. This the first airsoft event most of our members will have ever attended.

Thats a Herring Bone Twill, not the wool type. Good for afrika and italian events, but not hte west front or eastern front ones. We do 1-2 events a year italian front. So Sean, this uniform wouldn't be allowed for any scenario on the west front regardless of season? Is this for official events or stuff in our area? Its kind of my last gasp for a German impression as I don't think I will ever have the bucks for much else.

Its cold, you wouldn't want to wear it except at hot summer events. So far only two events a year on average, only one last year, was hot. What about the wool one that the 272nd has?

Well, its getting warmer, LOL! Hell, I'm thinking I'd have something to go with. Chances are good I wouldn't be able to travel to too many events during the winter anyhow. Plus, $75 for both trousers and tunic in my size is a pretty good deal. Heck, I could get myself and my son outfitted for the cost of one wool uniform from just about anywhere else.

Okay, I see M36, M40 and M43 style uniforms. Which would be the proper style or be used the most?

m40 is best all around, but M43 works at all of our events also and can sometimes be had for less money

Yep! And yes, its hot. We do maybe one or two events a year that the HBT is ok, but if you only have one tunic like me the wool one is it.

I spoke with Herr Unteroffizier and they don't want to sell that tunic since is our only official loaner tunic. However this guys is a fricken pro and getting good deals, but he said that he would only do that if the guy was really serious about joining.
Let me know what you think.

No problem about the tunic. Its cool.
As for how serious I am, money is a big issue. With my son I'd have to buy two of everything, and the uniforms I saw on eBay are much closer to being affordable. If funds weren't a problem then I would be more "serious" I guess. I may have to reevaluate all of this. Any way your Unteroffizier could check out that link I sent you and see if any of those uniforms are acceptable?

He is an Ebay addict. He can find gear at great prices. You should be able to find a used wool tunic for the same or cheaper than that HBT on ebay. You will just have to search a lot and be on top of it when the auctions end.

Need advice on US uniforms. Need shirt & trouser types, material, field jacket type, etc. Headgear? What is acceptable in the field besides helmets? Sounds like the Italian Front event we'll need wool?
Also confused on uniform sizes. Many I see have sizes such as 14, 15 1/2, 16, etc. I generally wear an XL shirt, chest is 44-46, trousers are 34-36 waist and 34 length. How would this translate to the army sizes?

Hi Redeye, You and I are exactly the same size, problem is we are way to big to fit in original uniforms, reproduction=lots of $. I have been able to find a few original items to fit me, but the cost is usually reflective of the size=expensive. I did find a pair of mustard wool pants in a size 34, with enough room to let out to fit my waist, 34s come up quite often on ebay for not to much money. wool shirts are almost unobtainable in our size original, so repro is the way to go, ATF has a very close shirt. A set of repro hbts is a good way to go, since GI's wore them in pretty much all theaters. They are available fairly reasonably from several vendors. Field jackets are again probably going to have to be repro, If you go with the 41, they were worn for all theaters. the 43's are good for late war. Headgear, I like to wear a jeep/radar style cap. At the N. Africa events, a short billed hbt cap is good, not sure where to get one though. As far as sizes go, sounds like you are refering to the neck sizes of the shirts, Most jackets go by chest sizes and originals also include the length such as a 44L the L indicating Long, again most of the soldiers of that era were rather small, so mostly you will encounter Regulars and Shorts indicated by.....R and S after the chest size. Leggings have a number designation from 1 to 5 or 6, 1's being extremely small, I were 3's. Pants usually go by the actual measurements. Repro stuff like field jackets sometimes go by modern sizes such as XL etc. In the case of some clothing it is made to be layered, therefore a 44 or even a 42 coat might fit you. If you are thinking of buying from a vendor, check with them to see how their clothes fit. Have I totally confused you? I am by no means an expert in all this, but having gone through all this recently, thought I could be of some assistance. Good luck with your efforts, Kevan Bowen

I have had good luck finding original uniform items at Thrift Stores and Antique stores. I found this WWII HBT cap at a Goodwill store
