My son and I began our US kit building saga today with a trip to the Army Surplus store. Got a helmet and liner (think it has the airborne style chin strap, will probably switch it out) two repro M1 Carbine mag pouches and two 1st ID patches. Still a lot to go.
The following is a list of stuff we're in the market for in case anyone is selling or you know of anyone selling this stuff. Please let me know. The stuff listed will take care of us to begin with.
-Uniforms (2pr, shirt and trousers) HBT or wool, adult medium and XL -Leggings (1pr) -M36 suspenders (2) -M41 or M43 feild jacket (1) size medium or XL (or both) -Musette bag (2) or appropriate pack -Canteen, carrier, canteen cup (4)

That's not an M36 , that's the M45 suspender , $28 is a little high for those , i picked up a pair of M45's about a week ago for $5 a piece.
I will keep an eye out for the stuff you have on the list. Next weekend is the Olympia Air Show , i will see if i can get you some stuff there. Ed.

Look for the M1928 Haversack as that was the most common style of pack that the infantry man wore.

Yeap , the 28 Haversack was the most common.
By the way MECLHG , i haven't been to Newman Lake in almost 10 years , last time i was there we had an Ice Hockey game on the lake it was frozen solid and it was tons of fun.

Yeah Congofal, sometimes we go out and play hockey on it. Though it has been a few years since I have been out.
Redeye, as for the uniform, the wools will get you through the whole war no problem, also with the M41 jacket. Depending on what unit you join, they may not let you were the M43 jacket unless it is a late war event.
For the canteen and cup, keep checking the Army surplus up north and the antique stores. Another thing to do is start hitting yard sales and estate sales. Talk to Klaus, he seems to find a lot of stuff at those.
Good Luck!

Was checking "At the Front". They have HBT uniforms not only for cheaper but they appear to be out of most of the sizes of the wool. They have HBT M43 jackets with trousers for $100. I'll keep checking back, but wool appears to be expensive stuff! Aren't most of the events you guys attend 1943 and later?

Yes, the Italy event is usually the earliest war event that I have seen, and thats 1943

Blake could probably fill in more on this for the 1st ID guys. The M43 gear didn't see much use until late in the war. To portray your average GI, the wools and HBTs were seen the most. Majority of our events are around D-day and right after. I think we have only one late war event and that is the only time I can wear my M43 gear (in the 82nd unit that is.) As for the 1st ID I'm not sure.
Just a little history, even though the M43 gear was designed and put into service in 1943, it did not make it to the front line until late in the war, like late 1944 and mostly in 1945. If you were a replacement coming into the unit in that time period you would probably have the M43's, otherwise everyone was still wearing the wools.

Thanks for the link, that helps quite a bit. Looks like the M43 jacket is out. Depending on availability and monetary funds, looks like I may be stuck with HBT uniform.

Redeye, I don't know if you are a member of this forum or not but check under the US for sale section as there are sometimes good deals to be found: ww2reenactors.proboards.com/index.cgi?And keep checking At The Front under their sale section because they do put their M41 jackets on sale. That is how I got mine.
